As a bridal and event makeup artist, we understand that every bride is unique and their wedding day is a reflection of their personal style, and we want to bring your vision to life by collaborating with you too achieve your dream look. Or perhaps you have an event, photoshoot etc hiring a professional makeup artist ensure your makeup not only looks great in person but also on camera for those all important images.

In this blog post, we will go through the main makeup styles, helping you understand and find the perfect match to suit you and your total look.

With so many makeup styles to choose from, there is some growing confusion about what natural is compared to full glam. If using Pinterest for your bridal vision board you will find that “natural makeup” will mostly actually come up as soft glam- full glam makeup images instead (normally technically enhanced or filtered, unfortunately) creating confusion as to what to ask your chosen makeup artist for.

We have the ability to enhance our individual features, highlight them and show them off, that’s the power of makeup, if used correctly.

So let’s deep dive into exactly what styles of makeup are what.

Soft, Romantic, Boho style

This style of makeup will reflect the soft, romantic, ethereal vibe of your wedding. Using soft browns, muted pinks and neutrals with a soft shimmer and glow.

Soft glow blusher teamed with subtle individual lashes makes the eyes pop for a beautiful romantic look!

Classic, timeless style

Classic matte style makeup, using full coverage makeup and powder to create that even toned matte style makeup look. Team with bronze blusher, eye makeup and a normally strong lip.

Vintage

Vintage style makeup—think Marilyn Monroe style—is 1950’s era makeup. Incorporating a strong winged eyeliner, smooth matte base, and a strong red or similar bold colour on the lips. Even a fake beauty spot if you feel brave!

Corrective Makeup

This style of makeup is used to correct and conceal any present skin conditions that may be present. I.e acne, rosacea, Skin discoloration, etc.

We would go in with a colour corrective pallet in this case prior to applying makeup to address and correct the colours.

It may mean you have a green base; don’t let it scare you! Green neutralises red tones so once all the makeup is applied, you look more even and the skin condition is no longer noticeable.

Corrective makeup can be used under the eyes too, to correct dark circles by contracting the blue/purple tones with a peachy colour under the concealer.

Soft Glam

This is a highly popular style of makeup, which is very similar to full-glam makeup but using softer earthy tones to blend seamlessly together.

This is a full face of makeup using a good coverage foundation, light soft contouring, and highlighter to give a glow and radiance to the face.

Eyes will include a soft, smoky eye, including eyeliner or blurred-out eyeliner, a shimmery lid or a more matt smoky eye teamed with a set of natural looking temporary eyelashes.

Lips will be normally lined and a muted pink/brown lipstick applied, i.e velvet teddy by Mac cosmetics or Pillow talk by Charlotte Tilbury.

Full Glam

This style of makeup is similar to soft glam but bolder and more defined. Using a full-coverage foundation and concealer for a full-coverage look.

The contouring is more prominent, and the eye makeup has a bolder, stronger effect—a dark, smoky eye look or cut-crease style makeup with a full set of eyelashes, and a strong defined brow.

Lips may be more heavily lines, darker or brighter, i.e., a plum colour or red for a red carpet, for a high-glam look finished off with a a generous amount of highlighter on the cheekbone, nose are and under the brow.

Barely there, Neutral makeup

This is where we showcase your beautiful skin by using minimal makeup to give you a very natural, barely there look.

Normally, this would consist of skin preparation, followed by a tinted moisturiser or skin tint, a lick of mascara and concealer to give you a sheer, fresh face glow. Great for showing of freckles!

Natural

Natural makeup highlights and enhances your best features in a subtle and understated way. Using earthy, soft tones instead of any dramatic colour’s  and enhancing natural skin tones to give a more polished, radiant version of your natural appearance.

I had such a wonderful experience at the Makeover Box. Danielle knew instantly the look I was after for my wedding day and gave me every confidence that on the day it would be perfect, and it was! It was great to have the option to book a hair and makeup trial before the main wedding day, it was a really fun experience. Danielle and her colleague Kim were fantastic on the day, so organised and lovely, they curated perfect looks for my bridesmaids and me. Can’t recommend them enough!
